Every year on the Fourth of July, America celebrates its birthday. This year is extra special — our nation turns 250 years old. That's called a semiquincentennial. It's a big, big number, and a big moment for our country.

But long before this 250th birthday, another voice spoke up on this same holiday. His name was Frederick Douglass.

The Speech That Still Matters

On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass stood before a crowd in Rochester, New York. The nation was 76 years old at the time. He was asked to give a Fourth of July speech. But Douglass gave a different kind of speech than people expected.

He asked a hard question: what does the Fourth of July mean to someone who is enslaved? His answer was honest and powerful. He said the holiday felt very different to him than it did to the people celebrating freedom, because freedom had not yet come for everyone in this country.
